April 2010. Writing in the Irish Times (No simple solutions on health equity and funding), the Minister for Health and Children Mary Harney questioned proposals put forward by the Adelaide Hospital Society and others for a universal health service, funded through insurance or otherwise. Such a service would take up to 15 years to build, would be disruptive of existing services, would not lead to the results promised and would prohibit people from seeing a doctor of their choice. There were no simple solutions and simplistic arguments served no purpose. How money was spent was more important than how it was raised (28th April 2010).
